Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker has explained how they manage to remain competitive despite losing some top talents like Ashley Du Preez, Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Junior Mendieta in recent times.

Stellies have been producing top quality players, whom they have went on to sell to big clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, including the likes of Du Preez, Zitha Kwinika and Mthethwa, who have joined Chiefs while Mendieta was signed by Sundowns.

In spite of the big losses, the Western Cape side have not only remained competitive in the league, as they recently won the Carling Knockout and ahead of Orlando Pirates and Chiefs on the log but have continued to produce big talent, as Jayden Adams earned a call-up to the Bafana Bafana Africa Cup of Nations squad - in comparison, Amakhosi had none of their players called up.

With Antonio Van Wyk linked with the Glamour Boys, Barker has explained why they are open to letting their players go and spread their wings elsewhere.

"It's a whole lot of things we do as a club well, hence we can lose players knowing that there are others that will come through the system and continue to carry the club forward," Barker said on PSL Heroes sit down on SuperSport TV.

"I think we've got a really good recruitment and data analysis department, so our recruitment is really good, we've got really good youth structures, development pathways that we develop for the players.

"And we also plan for the eventuality of a player leaving, so we do plan ahead and have contingency plans, so it's a whole lot of things we do well as a club hence we can lose players, knowing that there are others that will come through the system and carry the club forward.

"There's a lot of youngsters even below our first team that I believe have a great future, some in our youth. Currently in our first team there are young quality players such as Devon Titus, Jayden Adams, Qobolwakhe Sibande, who I really believe have bright futures," he concluded.

Olwethu Makhanya also became Stellies' first export to the United States of America after he was signed by Major League Soccer club Philadelphia Union in July last year.
