Kenya could lose its right to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations due to a possible suspension by FIFA.

An African nation is now reportedly at serious risk of losing the right it had won to host an upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

After CAF confirmed in September last year that Kenya, alongside Tanzania and Uganda, is set to co-host the continental showpiece in 2027, this might soon no longer be the case, with The Star reporting that the nation is now at major risk of losing its right to do so.

The 2024 Africa Nations Championship (Chan) is also to be hosted by Kenya but the nation could be prohibited from doing so too.

World football governing body FIFA has reportedly threatened the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) that it could face yet another ban after its latest Annual General Meeting (AGM) had been postponed by a local court, signalling third-party interference.

Earlier this month, the Mombasa High Court ruled that the FKF suspend its AGM due to a suit being opened against the federation, one that questioned its validity to host AFCON from a legal perspective.

FIFA, meanwhile, is said to have expressed great concern towards the situation as the FKF still needs to sort out the matter of its elections that need to take place later this year, viewing the suspension as outside interference.

The world football governing body is said to have warned that third-party interference is a violation of Article 19 of the FIFA Statutes, while Article 58 stipulates that recourse to ordinary courts is prohibited unless foreseen by the organisation.

It went on to warn the FKF that a violation of the aforementioned obligations may lead to sanctions and a possible suspension.

"Given the foregoing, the FKF is directed to conduct its AGM soon and to continue working towards conducting the FKF elections later this year," FIFA said in a letter to the FKF, per The Star

Kenya's football governing body was previously suspended in February 2022 after the association's president Nick Mwenda was arrested on charges of embezzling public funds that led to the government taking over administrative duties, which FIFA deemed to be third-party interference.
